Understanding animal behavior is a fundamental element of learning how to work with and potentially train horses. Becoming successful at teaching another animal a skill is an art where repetition and patience are necessary.

To develop the abilities necessary to train horses you should first assess your skill level and the type of training you wish to achieve.

SKILL LEVEL: Do you know how to handle a horse on the ground and to ride? Do you feel confident around horses, or do they scare you? These basic factors will determine your level of success and dictate the speed at which you will learn the art of training horses.

TYPE of TRAINING: Do you wish to teach a young horse to lead, be groomed, or load in a trailer? Or are you looking to teach a horse how to be ridden? If you have a horse that is broke, do you want to teach your horse a special skill or maneuver for the show competitions?

Once you have assessed your own skill level and desired training type, then you should find a local equine professional who can help you and your horse during this training process. This learn-by-doing technique will not only help you learn how to train your horse to the specific skill set desired but also get your horse trained in the process.

Attending clinics and seminars as well as watching other trainers in action can help you develop new skills and expand your methods of training. There are also many publications and video series that address training the horse for specific skill sets. Find those that are applicable for your goals.

Seeking professional help for this learning process will be time and even money well spent for the safety of both you and your horses.
