FAQ #492

What feed additive used to increase weight gain in cattle is highly toxic to horses?

Related resource areas: Horses

The feed additives you need to watch out for are Monensin sodium (trade name is Rumensin) and Lasalosid (trade name is Bovatec). There have been a number of cases reported where horses have eaten Rumensin-containing feed with disastrous results. Lasalosid is a problem, but the toxicity is not as bad as with Rumensin.
