FAQ #50

What is the minimum area needed for a horse for a turnout (exercise) paddock?

Related resource areas: Horses

There has been no research done to determine the minimum area required for a horse to exercise. The Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching recommends a minimum area of 0.1 (one-tenth) of an acre, approximately 4,500 square feet or 75 feet x 60 feet for an exercise lot. The age and activity level of the horses can make a large difference in the size or shape that will be most effective for the animal.
