Traps. The traps are placed in the gopher runs beneath the ground so owls are safe. Although there are a variety of toxicant formulations registered for use on pocket gophers, it is known that owls occasionally consume gophers that have eaten the toxic bait. The gophers probably have ingested a lethal or sub-lethal dose, and because of this intoxication, are perhaps more vulnerable to predators like owls when the gopher is on the surface (and thus visible to owls). If pesticides for pocket gophers are used, risk to owls is minimized by following the label instructions to the letter.
