You are either going to have to pull the ryegrass or live with it until the summer heat kills it off. Next year you can control it by keeping it from coming up. This grass is an annual, and an application of a preemergent herbicide in the fall will keep the seed from germinating. The likely reason your neighbors do not have the same problem is their lawn service company is applying the preemergent. Also, have your soil tested. Be sure the nutritional state of the soil is optimal for St. Augustine, not for annual ryegrass.
Contact your local Extension office for herbicide recommendations.
Unlike most other resources on the web, we have experts from Universities around the country ready to answer your questions.
