Robins, starlings, grackles, and brown thrush are frequently serious pests of blueberries, particularly in small plantings. They can eat a large amount of fruit.
Bird Management
*Bird control through lethal control is subject to state and federal laws.
*Visual repellents - Hawk-like balloons, balloons with large eyes painted on them, artificial snakes, and plastic streamers suspended over bushes have provided protection. However, birds generally lose their fear of these devices after a short period of time. Try moving these objects around every few days to lessen the bird's familiarity with them.
*Auditory repellents - These include devices that make explosive noises and electronic devices that give off bird distress calls at intervals. Check noise restriction codes in urban areas.
*Exclusion - The most effective method of protection is to cover the plants with netting. Install it just before berries begin to ripen and remove it when harvest is completed.
*Chemical repellents - There have been some effective chemical repellents for use against birds on blueberries. Check with your Extension office or your state agricultural agency about wether any compounds are registered in your state. They tend to be expensive, so your loss level has to be worthy of this expense. As with an pesticide use, follow the label instructions.
