Gardens and other small areas may be protected from woodchucks (Marmota monax) by erecting a fence of 2-inch x 4-inch mesh wire. Use 3/4-inch mesh if you also need to protect the garden from rabbits. The fence should extend at least 2 feet above the ground with an electrified strand on top. If electric wire is not legal or prudent in your area, make the fence at least 3 feet tall and wobbly or angled out to reduce climbing. Because woodchucks are excellent diggers, it is necessary to sink the fencing into the ground. The buried portion of the fence should be bent at a 90-degree angle, 2 to 3 inches below the surface, with the bottom of the fence pointing away from the garden at least 12 inches. This design discourages burrowing if it is started at the fence line. Electric fences can be used successfully; however, exercise caution before using high-voltage electric fencing equipment where children or pets may be present.
