All pesticides approved for use as a fire ant control measure are extensively tested for safe usage. However, they do contain ingredients toxic to target pests and may be toxic to other organisms as well. Fire ant control materials vary greatly in formulations and active ingredients. The key to safe use is to read and follow label directions. Directions on the label give instructions for amounts to use, site restrictions, protective clothing, reentry intervals and warnings for fish and wildlife. Most bait products contain very little toxin and pose very little threat to nontarget species.
