FAQ #818

Why shouldn't I disturb the mound before I treat it? Won't that just get more insecticide to the ants?

Related resource areas: Imported Fire Ants

It is best not to disturb mounds before treatment. Disturbing fire ant mounds causes them to relocate. If you are applying a bait, the ants will be too busy relocating or rebuilding to eat much bait. If you are applying a contact insecticide as an individual mound treatment, you may not be able to kill many ants before they evacuate into subterranean tunnels. Additionally, disturbing a mound may expose the individual to the wrath of the fire ant colony. See also FAQ #1116: "Why do imported fire ant colonies move when I treat the mound with a pesticide?"
