I would like a jump-start on fertilizing pecan trees besides using tree spikes.

Use ammonium sulfate around your tree this spring. Use one pound of this fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter. Put one-half of this amount on in April and the other half in May. If possible, spray the foliage with one of the liquid zinc products. Do this at budbreak and again two weeks later.
