Many of the chemicals recommended for fire ant management are toxic to fish and should not be applied in such a way as to risk their coming into contact with the surface of a pond. Bait products are the safest to use near water due to their relatively low toxicity and the small amounts used. Even so, it is best not to use baits if rain is imminent. Not only would the bait be rendered ineffective but some of the material would get washed into the pond. Contact insecticides, many of which are very toxic to fish, should be avoided. Boiling water can be substituted for contact insecticides or baits, especially for mounds very close to ponds or well heads. While not as effective, a couple of gallons of boiling water will eliminate a mound at least 60% of the time.
