If the fire ant mound that you treated or disturbed appears dead, but a new mound appears nearby within a few days, it is a good bet (but not a sure thing) that the new mound is the same colony of fire ants. A new colony started by a newly mated fire ant queen can take up to six weeks for a visible mound to appear.
