The number of resident geese (geese that don't migrate) has exploded in population. Resident geese rarely suffer the hazards that migratory geese do. They seldom encounter predators or harvesting by hunters. They benefit from the popular landscaping practice of expansive, manicured green lawns next to spacious lakes, which means no shortage of food. And resident geese don't suffer the stress of migration. In addition, some area property owners actively feed the geese, thereby increasing population growth.

Because of these optimum conditions, resident geese grow more quickly and to a larger size, reproduce earlier, lay and hatch more eggs, have a higher rate of survival, and live longer than migratory geese.
