I have navel ill at epidemic proportions in my calves. My local vet has taken swab samples from the navel and had the lab analyze them. Nothing unusual was found. Can a vaccine be given to either the cow or the calf as a preventative? Also, what causes navel ill? I'm the only one having a problem with this in my area; none of my neighbors have it. In my herd, calves are all born strong and healthy. It appears that the navel cord is much larger in diameter than before I had this problem. Updated: January 21, 2011

We have a cow that is bloating. She calved two weeks ago, and we noticed yesterday that she was high on her left side. We administered Therabloat® and in two hours nothing had changed. She was still very high on her left side. We ended up taking her to the vet. He described her bloat as a "dry bloat." He relieved the gas by putting a tube down her. In 10 hours, she was high again on her left side. We have relieved the gas now three times in 24 hours. He's not sure what could be the cause. Do you have any ideas? And what is "dry bloat?"
