  1. I have had a couple of horses with striped hooves: one regular quarter horse and one gaited. We know that this is a characteristic of Appaloosas, but neither of these have any such background. I have heard this is a passed gene trait from generations past to the present day from mustangs. What do the striped hooves indicate, and what does their presence imply? Updated: June 10, 2009
