I think I have most of the necessary paperwork completed to get started (accounting forms, farrier evaluation worksheets, accounts payable and receivable, schedule of liabilities, etc.), but I am still in need of some guidance so I do not "veer off track" during this time. 14. I have two horses. Everything is fine until I try to bring them in from their paddock. One has to stay in the paddock until I bring in the other. Then I come back for the second. However, when they realize it is time to go in, problems begin. I will have one on a lead line and open the gate; the other will come up and try to push through. Neither one wants to be the one that has to wait. Do you have any suggestions on how I can teach them to be calm and wait? Published: June 18, 2009
  15. My 16-year-old female Quarter Horse has a runny, snotty nose, a temperature of 100.5°F, and an irregular appetite. Her runny nose got worse over a three-day period, and we're up-to-date on all vaccines. The vet put her on Uniprem twice daily for five days. I mix the medicine with feed and corn oil to make it stick together. She is eating better but now has loose stools. Do I need to worry about the loose stools? If this is a virus, will it just run its course? If it is a bacterial infection, will the medication take care of it? Is the medication causing loose stools? Published: June 18, 2009
  16. I have a 25-year-old Paint Fox Trotter mare. She is losing her mane. It looks like she is going bald, but it is not breaking off. We are trying to put weight on her with beet pulp and weight gainer. She also gets MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), vitamins, and garlic granules. I'm not quite sure why she is losing the hair. The rolls look good, and the seller says he has sold a lot to horse owners and they love it. I have never run into this type of hay before and usually try to get timothy/orchardgrass mix. 27. Our Fox Trotter has a sarcoid on his inner hind right leg. We had it surgically removed in July, but it grew back. After surgery, the vet gave us some sarcoid cream from the University of Liverpool, England, from one of the top vets there who researches sarcoids. We have had to apply three sessions of the cream, in August., September, and October, and still the sarcoid returns. What other treatment is more effective that we should try? We do not have a lot of money to put into this but want our horse to be free of sarcoids. Published: June 18, 2009
  28. I brought home two horses (both previously companions of each other) from a boarding and training facility. Since being moved to our property, the horse I have had the most experience working with (lunging, riding, ground manners) is bonding the least to both my husband and me. He accepts very little touching and prefers to shy away. If I try to catch him, he initiates an escape plan. The horse I have had the least amount of experience with is very personable and willing (follows you everywhere, allows himself to be groomed, lunged, etc.). Also, when I took the second horse out of the paddock for lunging, the first horse threw a fit and ran around, bucking and complaining. The second horse was never out of sight of the first horse. The person selling the horses thought keeping these two horses together would be a good idea, but I am having second thoughts. Any suggestions? Published: June 18, 2009
