  3. My 10-year-old Missouri Foxtrotter mare with a mild case of Cushing's disease grass foundered five years ago, but with rapid, excellent treatment, her feet are fine. She has a cresty neck, stays fat on nothing, and did not shed well this summer (first time). I have noticed that she is not as muscular along her topline and hindquarters, but I had been contributing that to not enough riding. What can I feed or administer to her at this stage to avoid full-blown Cushing's disease and help with the current condition? I've read about using Chaste Tree Berry, other "natural" products, and pergolide (which I understand is expensive and must be used for a lifetime). Published: May 23, 2008
  4. My horse is very close to foaling. What are the signs I need to look for to determine that birth is imminent? Published: May 23, 2008
  5. Every month around the 13th or 14th of the month, my mare starts to lose interest in her feed and starts to lie down more frequently. By the 15th or 16th, she won't eat her evening meal and seems uninterested in everything but sleeping and hip sitting. I usually end up getting her up and putting her in a stall so she can sleep undisturbed. Most recently, however, on the 15th of March she had shooting diarrhea and acted "off" in the early evening. Her temperature was normal (100.8), and she didn't have any flags on her physical exam other than the wet diarrhea and that she was also butt pressing on the stall wall. We administered a biosponge, and she was eating and acting brighter several hours later. Could this all be from her heat cycle? If so, should I still breed her as I intended? If she acts like this from being in heat, how will she handle labor pains and birth? I have dealt with many mares, but none quite like her. Published: May 23, 2008
  6. A couple of years ago I got some chickens, and since then one of my horses has continually had matter in both of his eyes. He can still see clearly and is not in any pain. 8. My horse is losing her mane hair, and this doesn't appear to be the result of rubbing. The bare skin on her mane has specks of a brown flaky substance. The hair appears to be almost falling out, and the hair doesn't seem to be growing back. Could this be the result of a parasite? Published: May 23, 2008
  9. How do I get my 14-year-old pony to lose weight? I ride him for about an hour each day. I only feed him about 1/2 pound of sweet feed each day and about 8 to 10 pounds of hay per day. He just won't lose the weight! Published: May 23, 2008
