  1. We were unable to harvest johnsongrass before frost (some of it was 3 to 4 feet tall), but we were able to get it pretty dry before baling. Just wondering if there would be any danger in feeding johnsongrass hay to cattle. Updated: February 26, 2011
  2. I planted oats in mid-September for winter grazing. The oats are about 6 inches tall, but with the lack of moisture they are changing color and may start dying. Is it safe to graze the oats now, or is nitrate poisoning a possibility or some other problem? Also, a few grain sorghum stalks are left over from the previous crop. The frost killed them. Would it hurt the cattle to eat a few of them? Updated: February 08, 2011
  3. With cold temperatures, should I be concerned about any problems with nitrates or prussic acid when I graze rye pasture that was seeded last fall? Before the freeze, it was about 8 inches tall; now it is obviously stressed and stunted, but I want to graze it off before soybean planting in the same ground. Updated: October 15, 2010
  4. I've read that beets, turnips, carrots, and spinach may not be suitable for use in homemade baby food because they contain nitrates that are harmful to infants. Does this only relate to commercially produced (i.e. fertilized) vegetables or could it also apply to homegrown or organically produced vegetables? Updated: October 20, 2009
  5. We have oat bales that tested 1,409 ppm nitrate nitrogen concentration. I understand 1,400 to 2,100 ppm nitrate-nitrogen marginal. Is our 1,409 a need for concern? Updated: November 10, 2008
  6. What are considered safe nitrate levels in hay to be fed to beef cows? Updated: October 22, 2008
  7. Are drought-stricken corn stalks that are black and earless still a risk after several hard freezes for pregnant cows? Updated: October 13, 2008
  8. I have some high nitrate feed (milo with 2,483ppm nitrate). What can I do to feed this to cows? Updated: October 09, 2008
  9. Are the nitrates in wheat after frost harmful to cattle? Updated: February 28, 2008
  10. One of the questions that I had was the potential risks of beef cows developing nitrate toxicity as the result of grazing cornstalks following corn harvest. I was contemplating swathing a field of corn that didn't have very much corn in it for my cows to graze but decided against this after the sample that I sent in indicated that the whole plants contained 1600 ppm of nitrate-N. Updated: February 26, 2008
  11. I have some forage that is a summer annual, and I tested it for nitrates. It tested on the high side of the acceptable level of nitrates to be fed to pregnant beef cows. Do you have any suggestions for feeding this forage? Updated: February 18, 2008
