Exercised Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH) is defined as the presence of blood in the respiratory tract after exercise. Horses with EIPH are referred to as "bleeders". In some cases the amount of bleeding is very small and is only detectable with the use of a fiber-optic endoscope that is passed into the horse's bronchial tree. In other cases, the amount of bleeding is so profuse that blood will run freely from the horse's nostrils.
