Extruded feeds are ground feeds that are forced through a die under pressure and steam heat. The final product is a feed that has the consistency of dry dog food. The extruded horse feed is less dense than a pellet, and may weigh as little as one half the weight of the same volume of pellets. The physical form of the extruded feeds may also slow down the horse's rate of intake compared to pelleted feed. Extruded feeds are thought to be more digestible, which is why they are commonly fed to senior horses and hard keepers.
