Patten Shoe

Last Updated: July 16, 2008

View as web page

The patten shoe is used to elevate the heels of a horse that is confined to stall rest. The horse may have a cut or sprained tendon, such as a deep flexor tendon in the rear of the foot. The patten shoe takes tension off that tendon and transfers it to the suspensory ligament or the superficial flexor tendon temporarily while the deep flexor tendon heals. Patten shoes can be made from one piece of iron, or a small platform can be welded to a machine-made shoe to give the patten-shoe effect.
