Progesterone

Last Updated: July 17, 2008

View as web page

In the uterine endometrium, progesterone stimulates the development of the glands and tissues required for maintaining the pregnancy. Circulating progesterone reaching the brain acts to inhibit the release of lutienizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary. Progesterone changes the mare's behavioral pattern into that typical of diestrus. The mare is unusual in that she will not show signs of estrus as long as progesterone is circulating in her system, regardless of the amount of estrogen present.
