Sidebones are calcifications of the lateral cartilage of the third phalanx, or coffin bone. Lameness can occur during the initial phases of the the calcification, but after the condition is "set," the horse is usually serviceably sound. Sidebones are usually seen more in horses that toe-in or toe-out.
