Another type of pony breed is the Connemara, which is known for its ability as a jumper. This breed originated in the Connemara region of County Galway, Ireland. In the 16th century, crosses among Spanish-Barbs, Jennets, and Andalusians were mated with native ponies. Later, the offspring of these crosses were crossed with Arabians.
In 1923, the Connemara Pony Breeders Society was formed to protect the integrity of the breed by preventing it from being crossed out of existence. This breed did not make it to America until 1951.
In 1956, the American Connemara Pony Society was established. All colors are permitted except spotted or blue-eyed cream ponies. Some American Connemaras have reached 15 hands; however, the Irish Connemara remains pony size.
