Disease: Equine Rabies

Equine rabies is a highly fatal, contagious disease that affects the central nervous system.

Agent

Virus

Vectors

Domestic dogs and cats, along with skunks, foxes, raccoons, and bats

Route

Bite and/or saliva of an infected animal

Symptoms

  • Depression
  • Incoordination
  • Ataxia
  • Colic
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Muscle spasms of the third eyelid
  • Blindness
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Restlessness

Treatment

No effective treatment is known to date

Prevention

Vaccination
