Anaerobic metabolism is the breaking down of fuel stores to produce energy without the use of oxygen and is a rapid means of producing a limited supply of energy.

In the absence of oxygen, only carbohydrates may be metabolized for ATP production. The end products of anaerobic metabolism are lactate and heat.
