Each cotton producing state conducts Official Variety Trials (OVT) with cotton. These trials represents entries from private industry, public breeding programs, and usually contain standard varieties for comparisons. Cotton OVTs are almost always replicated using proven small-plot field testing protocols and often are conducted at multiple sites within a given state.
In some cotton states, a significant on-farm cotton variety testing program also exists. While not always replicated, these trials can be useful for producers in finding more localized data. In some cases, these data are published to support cotton OVT information.
It is always wise to consider many sources of data when choosing a cotton variety. Local data is usually best; however, results from similar conditions within a state, or even from another state can be useful. More information is always better, so consider data from as many sources as possible when determining which cotton varieties to plant in any given year.
