AMES, Iowa--A meeting to discuss using the byproducts of ethanol for feed in beef operations has been set for Thursday, Dec. 13, in Mason City.
“Utilizing Distillers Grains in Beef Operations,” will be held from 12:30 - 3 p.m. at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in Room 107 of the Careers Building. The meeting is open to the public. There is no cost to attend and no preregistration is required.
The session will focus on methods for storing distillers grains and using distillers grains in rations for wintering beef cows and feedlot cattle.
“Wet or modified distillers grains are typically more economical for the beef producer,” said Russ Euken, Iowa State University (ISU) Extension livestock specialist. “But storing and transporting the products can be a challenge for producers who use smaller amounts.”
Wet distillers grains have a short shelf life, as they develop mold and spoilage organisms rapidly. They also can have a soupy, gooey texture, which makes using conventional storage delivery and handling systems difficult.
The meeting is sponsored by ISU Extension and NIACC in cooperation with Golden Grain Energy and Hawkeye Gold.
