ORONO, Maine-—University of Maine Cooperative Extension has just published “What to Look for in a Horse Boarding Facility,” a publication outlining the many things horse owners must consider when looking for the right stable for their needs and financial situations. Developed by Extension Educator Donna Coffin, this publication can be purchased for $1 by calling 1-800-287-0274 (in Maine) or (207) 581-3792, or by visiting http://www.extension.umaine.edu.

“You need to find out specifically how the stable defines its level of service and what is included in its boarding fee,” says Coffin. “Be sure you understand what the facility is providing and what you as the horse owner will be required to provide—before you move your horse to a stable.”

This document includes topics that horse owners should ask the facility about, such as stables, pastures, feed, health care and insurance. The guidelines refer to horses, but are also applicable to ponies, donkeys, mules and other equidae.
