EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Livestock, dairy and poultry farm employees, managers, owners and industry representatives can learn about the requirements for composting in the recently revised Bodies of Dead Animals (BODA) Act during a workshop Jan. 10 in Sparta and Zeeland and Jan. 11 in Clarksville.

The BODA workshop will help participants understand the composting process, various composting methods and what producers need to do to comply with the act.

The workshop also qualifies as a Phase I meeting as part of the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program.

Presenters will be Dale Rozeboom, Michigan State University (MSU) associate professor of animal science, and Charles Gould, MSU Extension educator for Ottawa County.

They will also demonstrate a new computer program, the Spartan Composting Optimizerspreadsheet.

The registration fee is $20 for the first person and $5 for each additional representative from the same farm. The registration deadline is Jan. 4. The registration fee includes handouts, refreshments and a copy of the new spreadsheet.

A 24-inch compost thermometer will be given away as a door prize at each workshop, compliments of REOTEMP Instrument Corp.
