LSU AgCenter Sets Dairy Field Day

Lousiana State University AgCenter Research Station will hold a field day to update dairy producers of ongoing research at the station, including discussions by LSU professors and veterinarians.

Baton Rouge, La.--The LSU AgCenter’s Southeast Research Station in Franklinton will hold a field day on Nov. 13 to update dairy producers of ongoing research at the station.

The program will include three educational field stops followed by indoor presentations and lunch, according to Dr. Mike McCormick, coordinator of the Southeast Research Station.

“The program will begin with exhibits, donuts and coffee at 9 a.m.,” McCormick said. “The tours will be conducted from 9:30 until 11:30. From 11:30 until 12:30 we will have the indoor portion of the program, with lunch served at 12:30.”

At the first field stop, Dr. Vinicius Moreira, assistant professor of waste management and nutrition, and Dr. Kun Jun Han, professor of agronomy at the research station, will discuss the dairy waste lagoon and new forage research.

At the second stop, McCormick will present information on brown mid rib sorghum baleage.

At the final stop, Dr. Dennis French, an LSU AgCenter veterinarian, will discuss embryo transfer in heat-stressed Holstein cows.

McCormick said the indoor portion of the program will feature a discussion on fertilizing forages for optimum yield and quality by Dr. J. Cheston Stevens, a soil scientist with the LSU AgCenter’s Dean Lee Research Station in Alexandria, and conclude with a look at the 2007-2008 milk price outlook by Dr. Jim Beatty, technical representative for Purina/ Land O’Lakes Inc.
