Buckskin Horse

Ashley Griffin, University of Kentucky

There are two registries for Buckskin(color breed/stock type/hunter type) horses.

  • The American Buckskin Registry Association, Inc. (ABRA), is the oldest active Buckskin registry in existence. It was organized in 1963, then reorganized and incorporated in 1965. It is a non-profit organization that collects, records, and preserves the pedigrees of Buckskin, Dun, Red Dun, and Grulla (grew-yah) horses and ponies.
  • In addition, the International Buckskin Horse Association (IBHA) was formed as the International Buckskin Horse Registry in California and subsequently moved to Indiana in 1970. IBHA registers Buckskin, Dun, Red Dun, and Grulla horses.

Buckskin coat color is predominantly a shade of yellow, ranging from gold to nearly brown. Points such as the mane, tail, and legs are black or dark brown, and a true Buckskin has a dorsal stripe, shoulder stripe, and barring on the legs.

Duns are a lighter shade but otherwise look like Buckskins.

The Grulla, with its name is derived from the Spanish word meaning "Blue Crane," has a smoky blue or mouse-colored hair coat with black points. No white hair is mixed in the darker hair.

Red Duns are red and have a body coat that varies from the yellow to nearly flesh color. Red Duns must have a dorsal stripe and will have dark red points.

Grulla, Red Dun, and some shades of Dun must have a dorsal stripe. Buckskins, however, are not required to have a dorsal stripe to be registered.
