AMES, Iowa – A professor who is recognized throughout the state and nation for his innovation in the systems approach to beef cattle production was honored by Iowa State University (ISU) on Monday, Sept. 10.
Daryl Strohbehn, ISU professor of animal science and Extension specialist who works with the Iowa Beef Center, was awarded the Iowa State University Award for Outstanding Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice during the 2007 fall convocation and awards ceremony at the university.
The award recognizes a faculty or staff member who has demonstrated outstanding performance in statewide leadership in extension or professional practice and has achieved national recognition for outreach activities. The winner receives $1,500.
”He has been a national leader in standardized performance analysis to help producers benchmark their herds’ production and economic performance,” said John Lawrence, director of the Iowa Beef Center, which is at Iowa State. “He is an enthusiastic and dedicated educator and has a real passion for his work and people he serves.”
Strohbehn pioneered the Beef Cow Business Records program in Iowa; standardized performance analysis guidelines at the national level; chaired regional handbook efforts for Iowa State University Extension; and organized several national conferences for in-service training for his peers. He also has served on several regional and national commodity advisory boards.
Much of Strohbehn’s work has become the national standard in the industry. He has helped producers make profitable production decisions based on his analysis of records.
Strohbehn has worked at Iowa State since 1974 and with the Iowa Beef Center since it was created in 1996.
At the university, Strohbehn provides instruction in cow/calf management and is a guest lecturer in animal science, veterinary medicine and farm operations. His areas of research are applied to beef cattle nutrition and management, field data analysis and computer applications in beef cattle enterprise management.
He received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Michigan State University in 1974, a Master of Science degree from Michigan State in 1972 and a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1970.

The Iowa Beef Center was formed in 1996 by a legislative mandate with the goal to support the growth and vitality of the beef cattle industry in the state. It links Iowa State University Extension, research and education to directly help Iowa’s beef producers and allied industries.
