TWIN FALLS, Idaho —- New fact sheets on fluid and electrolyte therapy in calves, concentrated-animal operations for cow-calf enterprises, economic comparisons of artificial insemination and natural service, and ranch-road maintenance have been added to the Cow-Calf Management Guide and Cattle Producer’s Library --- a perennially popular reference for Western cattle producers since 1980.
That brings to 250 the number of fact sheets in the 947-page handbook, which is available for $95 as a three-ring binder—with a CD-ROM disk included—or $35 for the CD-ROM alone. The product is peer-reviewed and revised annually by the Western Beef Resource Committee, a team of state Extension beef specialists and educators from 12 Western states.
In addition to the four new fact sheets, the latest edition of the binder includes nine revised fact sheets covering beef quality assurance, trace minerals, supplementation strategies for grazing beef cattle, trichomoniasis, minimizing hay waste, improving pastures, preparing calves for the feedlot, and breed association contacts.
A recent survey of handbook subscribers found that 2 percent use it daily, 19 percent refer to it weekly and 42 percent depend on it monthly, says Benton Glaze, University of Idaho Extension beef specialist in Twin Falls.
“It’s probably one of the best sources of beef-cattle production information that a producer could get anywhere,” Glaze says. “It’s Western based, but there’s much information that would apply to beef-cattle operations across the United States.”
More than 10,000 copies have been purchased by users in 42 states and eight countries. At some universities, the handbook has been adopted and used as a textbook in beef-production classes.
