The slow gait is performed by the five gaited Saddlebred. This four beat gait is similar to a regular walk, faster than the running walk but slower than the rack. The slow gait is characteristic of extreme action rather than a ground covering stride. This four beat lateral gait is difficult for the horse as the hind and front leg on the same side leave the ground at the same time, yet land at different times since the front legs demonstrate extreme animation and stay in the air longer. Thus, causing this gait to be irregular and uncomfortable to ride.
