Ashley Griffin, University of Kentucky

Gravel is an infection that penetrates the white line of the hoof and travels up between the sensitive and insensitive laminae until it erupts at the coronet.

The term "gravel" is used because a small stone is usually the causative agent, but a wound, crack, or bruise can be the cause.

Lameness occurs until the abscess erupts, after which rapid healing occurs.
