The Federal Area Veterinarian in Charge (AVIC) is responsible for working with the State Veterinarians to ensure continued animal health at the state level. In addition, the AVIC is responsible for animal disease surveillance, supplies for disease eradication programs, veterinary accreditation, animal health monitoring, and endorsement of health certificates.

In the event of an animal disease outbreak, the AVIC will work with the State Veterinarian and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to quarantine infected animals, euthanize as necessary, dispose of carcasses, disinfect premises, and conduct epidemiology studies.
