After school extended learning program works to implement a nutrition education program.

Released Feb. 25, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Prince George's County Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) has collaborated with the Prince George's County Public Schools Before and After School Extended Learning Program over the past 2½ years to implement a nutrition education program to help youth (5-12 years old) become more physically active and gain a better understanding of healthy food choices. To date, approximately 12 series of classes (4 lessons per school over a four-week period) have been conducted, and a total of 70 schools, including 3,063 children, have participated in this new, EFNEP after school nutrition intervention.

A parental education component ensures that parents reinforce the same messages at home.

Results have shown that approximately, 67 percent of the children have increased their knowledge in choosing healthful snacks/beverages, and approximately 57 percent of the children have positively changed or have expressed the intent to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables, low-fat/non-fat milk and participation in physical activity, such as games and play time. This program was developed by Denise Benoit Moctezuma, EFNEP Coordinator in collaboration with the Prince George's County Public Schools.
