In the southern US, soil pHs of 5.8-6.2 are recommended. Lime should be applied to achieve this pH when possible. In the Midwest, pHs closer to 7 are considered ideal.
If Magnesium (Mg) content of the soil is low or medium, use Dolomitic lime if possible. Calcitic lime may be used when Mg is not a concern.
