Soil pH needs to be in an optimum range for maxiumum nutrient uptake.
In the southern United States, soil pH values of 5.8 to 6.2 are recommended. Lime should be applied to achieve this pH when possible. In the midwest, pH values closer to 7 are considered ideal.
If magnesium (Mg) content of the soil is low or medium, use dolomitic lime if possible. Calcitic lime may be used when Mg is not a concern.
