First Webcast on air quality by the Air Quality Education in Animal Agriculture project.

Released June 23, 2008

Ammonia: the Air-Water Interface is the topic of a live educational Webcast from eXtension on Friday, June 27 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

Extension specialists from across the United States will share information in an hour-long Webcast, the first in a series of air quality presentations sponsored by the Air Quality Education in Animal Agriculture project. They will focus on why ammonia is a concern and best management practices for reducing ammonia losses to the atmosphere.

What is the role of ammonia emissions from livestock farms in the formation of small particulates (PM2.5)? The speakers will share experiences with monitoring ambient concentrations of ammonia within the Cache Valley of northern Utah and southeastern Idaho. They will discuss the fate of these particles as they deposit on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Multidisciplinary efforts in Colorado help explain agriculture’s role in increased nitrogen deposits in Rocky Mountain National Park.

The presenters are Randy Martin, an associate professor of environmental engineering from Utah State University; Jessica Davis, director of the Institute for Livestock and the Environment at Colorado State University; and Pius Ndegwa in biological systems engineering at Washington State University.

July 18 topic: federal air regulations

A Friday, July 18 Webcast will focus on federal air regulations and their relevance to animal agriculture. The presentation will include an update on the National Air Emissions Monitoring Study (NAEMS). The speakers are Sally Shaver from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Al Heber from Purdue University. The federal air regulations Web cast is at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

The Web meeting room opens 15 minutes before the start time. Go to http://connect.extension.iastate.edu/lpelc/ to view.

LPE Learning Center

The seminar is hosted by the Livestock and Poultry Environmental (LPE) Learning Center, part of eXtension. The center advocates that individuals involved in public policy issues, animal production and delivery of technical services for confined animal systems should have on-demand access to the nation's best science-based resources.

The center has a monthly newsletter. You may subscribe online. All information including archived monthly Webcasts from the past year is on www.eXtension.org under the resource area animal manure management.

eXtension is an educational partnership helping Americans improve their lives with access to timely, objective, research-based information and educational opportunities. eXtension’s interactive Web site, http://www.extension.org, is customized with links to local Cooperative Extension Web sites. Land-grant colleges were founded on the ideals that higher education should be accessible to all, that colleges should teach liberal and practical subjects and share knowledge with people throughout their states.
