Hoof Abscess

Last Updated: September 26, 2011

View as web page

A hoof abscess is an infection of the sensitive tissue of the foot.

Clinical signs include:

  • Heat in the hoof
  • Increased digital pulse
  • Lameness

A farrier, who can often relieve the pressure of the abscess and virtually eliminate lameness, should be consulted.

Untreated abscesses may take the path of least resistance and migrate up the hoof and break out at the coronary band.
