Brisket Disease

Brisket Disease- A noninfectious disease of cattle characterized by congestive right heart failure due to stress of high altitude (usually above 7,000 ft).

Clinical Symptoms

  • edema in brisket
  • jugular vein distension
  • high neonatal calf mortality

Prevention

  • keep cattle below 5,000 ft altitude
  • practice genetic selection (primarily bulls using pulmonary arterial pressure test

Treatment

  • take affected cattle to elevations below 5,000 ft
