Downer - Term for animals that are disabled due to illness or injury. These animals are banned for entering the food supply chain.

Common causes of downer cattle are:

  • dystocia
  • broken/fractured bones
  • neurological disease
  • metabolic disease
  • toxic disease

To prevent downer cattle:

  • correct stocking rate/correct management practices
  • ensure proper BCS before calving
  • prevent diseases from spreading
