Corpus luteum

Corpus luteum (CL) — A yellowish mass of luteal tissue on the ovary formed by an ovarian follicle that has matured and discharged its ovum. If fertilization occurs, the CL persists for several months, secreting progesterone. If fertilization does not occur, the CL degenerates.
