Grass Tetany

Grass Tetany- (hypomagnesemia) Condition most pronounced in the spring caused by low blood Mg levels in cattle and sheep. Tetany most commonly occurs in cows that are nursing calves under 2 months of age. It usually occurs when animals are grazing lush green grass pastures. To prevent grass tetany, free-choice mineral supplement containing Mg should be available during early grazing season. 

Common Signs:

  • tetanic
  • staggers
  • convulsions
  • coma
  • frequently death
