WASHINGTON -- The first appetizers of “smoked salmon devilish eggs,” entrees of “butternut squash ravioli” and “bone-in rib eye,” not to mention desserts such as “heirloom apple pie” are being placed before customers at Founding Farmers.
Located in the new International Monetary Fund building just three blocks from the White House, Founding Farmers is an upscale, casual dining establishment developed by North Dakota Farmers Union. The restaurant continues the organization’s pioneering concept of sourcing restaurant food directly from family farms and ranches to consumers.
“I am optimistic Founding Farmers will be successful,” says North Dakota Farmers Union President Robert Carlson. “This restaurant is in a great location, has benefited from careful planning, and exemplifies perfect design execution.”
The restaurant, which seats approximately 250 guests, was named in celebration of family farmers and America’s founding fathers, many of whom owned and farmed land in the surrounding D.C. area. Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson once owned land along the Potomac River.
The menu includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, centered on homemade “scratch” cooking, with a blend of old and new recipes – everything from classic American dishes such as potpies, steaks and hearty “farm” sandwiches to big salads, breads, pastries and pies. The average dinner entree ranges from $15-$30.
Employing a “true food and drink” philosophy, Founding Farmers focuses on providing meals made from fresh, locally-sourced and family farm-sourced ingredients.
In 2006, NDFU opened Agraria, another restaurant featuring family-farm sourced ingredients, in lower Georgetown which serves diners in the Washington Harbour area. “Having these two restaurants in close proximity will permit Farmers Union to make the most of our efforts to connect family farm agriculture to the nation’s most discriminating consumers.”
