Generically, the term mashup refers to an application that combines similar types of data from multiple sources. This term originated from the music industry when a new song was made from several existing tracks. To use an example with respect to geospatial technologies including GIS and GPS, one might see an internet application capable of displaying GIS data such as streets and points collected with a GPS overlaid on aerial photographs, all of which come from different data sources.
