MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University’s 2008 Swine Day will be held Nov. 20 at the K-State Alumni Center in Manhattan. The day will feature presentations by noted agricultural economist Ron Plain, plus K-State research updates, a technology trade show and an open house and tailgate party at the university’s new swine finishing facility.
An all-day Technology Trade Show will begin at 8 a.m., and the formal program is scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m.
After welcome remarks, keynote speaker Ron Plain, of the University of Missouri, will give presentations on “Feed versus Fuel – What Will Be the New Trends for Corn and Soybean Meal Pricing?” and “What Can We Expect for Pork Prices for 2009 and Beyond?”
K-State Research and Extension swine researchers and specialists will give presentations on current research aimed at helping improve net returns of swine businesses.
The day will begin wrapping up at 3:30 p.m., with an open house and tailgate party at the new swine finishing facility, built as part of the K-State Swine Teaching and Research Center. Attendees can view the new building, socialize with fellow producers and enjoy hospitality with a K-State BBQ. The facility was just completed, providing an opportunity to hold an open house before pigs start filling the barn shortly after Swine Day.
Free parking is available at the university’s swine farm, with a complimentary shuttle available all day to the Alumni Center, said Joel DeRouchey, livestock specialist with K-State Research and Extension. The swine farm is located at 3101 College Avenue, just north of the poultry and dairy units on Marlatt Ave. in north Manhattan. Limited parking is available at the Alumni Center for a $4 fee.
“Many individuals and groups are to be thanked for making the new K-State swine finishing building a reality,” DeRouchey said.
