North Dakota Manure Applicator, CAFO Operators School Set

Nutrient management will be the topic of a daylong program March 12.

FARGO, N.D. -- The North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center, with cooperation from the North Dakota Department of Health, will host a daylong program at the center March 12 for manure applicators and concentrated animal feeding operations, as well as other livestock facilities.

The program will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“This school will be a great learning opportunity for custom manure applicators and livestock producers,” says Chris Augustin, NDSU Extension Service nutrient management specialist.

Speakers for the morning session and their topics are:

  • Ron Wiederholt, NDSU Extension nutrient management specialist - his research and results on manure fertilizers
  • Karl Rockeman, North Dakota Department of Health - recently updated regulations for confined animal feeding operations
  • Shafiqur Rahman, NDSU Extension animal waste engineer - solid manure application systems
  • Teresa Dvorak, NDSU Extension livestock nutrient management specialist - animal diets and how they affect manure nutrients
  • Augustin - manure spreader calibration demonstration

Speakers for the afternoon session and their topics are:

  • Anne Ehni, Wells County Soil Conservation District manager - composting animal manures and what she has learned being a custom composter for area producers
  • Cindy Evenson, AGVISE lab manager - how to sample and interpret manure nutrient test results
  • Wiederholt - the development and interpretation of a nutrient management plan
  • Larry Cihacek, associate professor in the NDSU Soil Science Department – the nitrogen and phosphorus cycle and how those valuable nutrients will convert from manure to plant-available nutrients
  • Charlie Stoltenow, NDSU Extension veterinarian - manure biosecurity issues
